Classes upon classes, tutorials upon tutorials and finally, you would reach a stage where a project would be introduced. A project is a research given to students by their supervisors concerning their fields of study. It is a compulsory credit unit course for all intending graduating students. Project topics, depending on the department are mostly developed during the students internship, in other cases, the project supervisor suggests or recommends a topic to their student. While in a fewer cases, the topic could be the student's idea right from their first year in school.
The idea of projects is to test the student's readiness to solving real life and industry based problems. This is done by collating data about the project, juxtaposition of facts and figures, identifying problems and proferring solution. Offering possible recommendations where necessary. In other ways, students make research to solve industry based problems. The project starts when a supervisor assign a topic or appove their student's topic and it is formally finalised when the students stands before a panel of lecturers to defend his/her research and onwards awarded a grade.
The project defense is usually the penultimate of one's career in the university and it's not supposed to be treated with kid's gloves. Adequate measure of seriousness is required of the student to get the best possible grade. The following tips are required in project writing and defense.
1. Be Time Conscious: project work is not elementary school mathematics that one can afford all the time to learn/do. Project writing could be very demanding and tedious in many instances. The factor of time must be considered so as to enable the student gather all the resources needed on time, writing the project work and rehearsing fir the defense.
2. Avoid plagiarism: Presenting someone else's work as yours is ordinarily a punishable offence. In as much, it is a project work, avoid copying someone else's work. Other people's work can only be cited or referenced.
3. Have a good relationship with your supervisor: it is advisable that you have a very good professional relationship with your supervisor. Carry them along in all you do. Recieve industry based advice from them. Adhere to their corrections and criticism and you will eventually arrive at a good job.
4. Write a good project: The biggest huddle after doing a proper research work is having to write it. Writing could be an herculean task in a student's project work. It goes beyond just putting everything in black white, it has to do with arranging one's work in the right order. Citing and making references, sticking to a particular font or writing style. This part needs proper attention so as not to rubbish all the hardwork put into getting the project data.
5. Prepare for your defense: One thing many students fail to do is preparing for the defense. It's good thar you have done a nice job in writing your project. However, failing to present your work to the defense panel articulately can cost the student a whole lot of marks. It's therefore advisable that the student prepares adequately for their defense.
