NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC).
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a one-year program/training that every graduate from either the public or private higher institutions must partake in. It was formed 22nd of May 1973 by Yakubu Gowon with its headquarters situated in Abuja, Nigeria. It was set up to mend the gap the civil war caused on the national. When a student graduates, he or she would be deployed to any state different from the state of origin, away from friends, family and familiarities for intense military training, this training is to imbibe discipline on them. The orientation and training might last for 3 weeks at most and after that, the graduates would be deployed to their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA) where they would be expected to complete their (eleven month with a month of vacation) service to the country; for every week or two weeks, days would be allocated to them to carry out community services. It is mostly known that corp members receive salary from the government from this one year as well as from their bosses in the place of primary assignment.
It is with immense pride and joy to dress in the NYSC uniform(a khaki, boots, belt, white and green with NYSC inscription shirt and a face cap). It stretches one's horizon as it gives room to explore different cultures and traditions. It brings about the unity of youths as different people meets in different states and stays together before their Passing Out Parade. Passing Out Parade (POP) is done at the end of the service when everyone would wear the pride of the country(their uniforms), march and make merry. It is usually done and celebrated nation-wide.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NYSC PROGRAM.
1. To imbibe discipline in the youth.
2. Exposure to other regions of the country.
3. To be able to handle pressure and harsh environments.
4. To imbibe the spirit of self reliance and making sure youths can develop their skills and becoming self employed.
5. To promote national unity and growth.
6. Exposure to some false traditions and renewing the mind to see the real deal, eliminating ignorance.
7. To value hardwork and every penny.
For every parent/guardian, it is paramount to see the child go through the four walls of the school, overcome every challenge and witness the passing out parade of the child because it is a big deal since being a graduate is not easy.
Deployment to the northern states is very common as in the north, education is not held in high regards but this system is a bit flexible as fresh graduates can easily apply for re-deployment to the state of their choice. It has brought light to northern communities as education has climbed the ladder, making the old tradition of the girl child not worthy of education be abolished as it encourages and open doors to free opportunities to eradicate poverty, education is a tool to eradicate not only ignorance but poverty as well. Every Nigerian graduate must serve the country.
