COURSES OFFERED IN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA.

   When in secondary school, different departments are introduced: arts, science, and commercial. English Language and Mathematics are necessary subjects all departments must study and pass to be able to qualify for any examination. The departments determine what course students can apply for and you must have at least a 5 credit pass in the expected subjects. Some courses require just one sitting(WAEC passed once) while some accepts merging of two different ordinary level result as well as acquiring a good score in JAMB and POST-UTME(the entrance examination set by the school) as every school as its cut off points, making mostly medical and law courses have the highest cut off points. 

1. ART DEPARTMENT. 

   For the arts, subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Arts and Crafts, Literature, Music, Economics and Christian Religious Knowledge/Islamic Religious Knowledge are involved, these subjects are the guide against writing WAEC, picking a course of study and writing JAMB. We have courses like Creative and Visual Arts, English, Political Science, Psychology, Theater Arts, Linguistics, Music, Mass Communication, International Relations, Law to mention a few that centers around social sciences, behavioral sciences and fine arts. Majority of the courses' durability is 4 years, that is, 80% of arts courses can be studied for 4 years while Law and a few others are for 5 years plus internship and all and the degree gotten is called Bachelor of Arts(B.A.).

2. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT. 

  The science department is very broad. We have subjects like Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Agricultural Studies and Geography. The science department is vast as it involves courses under categories:

* MEDICAL LINE: Medicine and surgery, Physiology, Nursing, Dentistry, Optometry, Human Anatomy, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Public Health, Radiology, etc. The duration can be 6 years and above as areas of specialization are introduced, we have: Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Gynaecology, etc. The degree gotten is called MBBS for medicine and surgery, B.Pharm for pharmacy, Bachelor of Science in Nursing(BSN.), etc. 

* ENGINEERING LINE: Marine Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, etc. The duration is 5 years of constant learning and practical. Of course, for every course, we have areas of specialization. So, one could choose to further after obtaining the first degree, the degree gotten is called Bachelor in Engineering(B.Eng.)(from conventional higher institutions) and for specialized higher institutions, Bachelor in Technology (B.Tech.). 

* AGRICULTURAL LINE: Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, Crop Science and Technology, Food Science and Technology, Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology, Soil Science and Technology, Forestry and Wildlife Technology. The duration can be 4 years and above, depending on the choice of course. The degree gotten is called Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. 

* INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY LINE: Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technbology, etc.  The duration is usually 4 years and the degree gotten is called Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (B. Sc IT). 

* PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCES LINE: Chemistry, Physics and Biology are for pure sciences. Geology, Industrial Chemistry, Industrial Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, Geophysics, etc. The duration is mostly 4 years but some courses are for 5 years and the degree gotten is Bachelor of Applied Science(BAS) and Bachelor of Pure Science (B. SC). 

* ENVIRONMENTAL LINE: Environmental Management and Toxicology, Architecture, Quantity Surveying and Environmental Technology. Some might take up to 4 years and some, 5 years. The degree gotten is called Bachelor of Environmental Science (B. ES) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch). 

3. COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT. 

    Deals with subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Marketing, Civic Education and Commerce. Under the commercial department, we have courses like: Office and Information Management, Public Administration, Transport and Planning, Business Administration, Accounting/Accountancy, Political Science, Human Resources Management, Mass Communication, Economics, Marketing and Psychology. Courses in this category takes 4years to study and the degree gotten is Bachelor of Science Degree in Business, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), etc.
