There are many factors involved in passing JAMB. Factors like the choice of institution, course of study, the tuition fee to mention a few. It determines the admission into the institution unlike the WAEC result that can be used in any West African country, the JAMB result can only be used in Nigeria. We have other independent bodies that do not use JAMB like the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB) that deals with only your capability for one year and sets an examination that takes you straight to 200 level in the university of your choice when you pass it. There's also a program called Pre-degree, as the name implies, it's a one year program that trains students in preparation of what to see and meet in the university, after the one year teachings, examination would be conducted and students would be asked to write JAMB. The addition of their JAMB score and pre-degree score with plenty of processes along the way would determine if students are qualified for the particular course that was chosen before giving the admissions out. There are steps to take before sitting for JAMB.
HOW TO CHOOSE A COURSE.
Factors surrounding this are numerous, the technicality, tuition, location and future of the course in a country like Nigeria.
1. SELECTION OF INSTITUTION
JAMB gives candidates four choices to make; first, second and third choices for institution and course. The first choice of institution is usually a university, the second, a polytechnic, the third, a college and the fourth, any random institution. The fourth at times is not really considered by students. Choosing an institution comes with plenty of thoughts, thoughts about security and availability of some basic amenities. Knowing fully well how expensive a private university is, majority of the students opt for federal universities as the belief that federal univetsities' certificates are recognized everywhere in the world. Go to a university that is widely acknowledged so as to secure a safe position in any firm in the future. Well, in some firms, they look at what you can achieve with your hands, the practical aspect, so, it is advisable to opt for schools with quality practical availability.
2. SELECTION OF COURSE.
No doubt some courses are overrated and some, underrated. Parents/guardians usually make this mistake by choosing or putting their choice on their wards, they prefer going for big names like medicine, law, engineering, accounting than going for courses like theatre arts, business administration, etc. It is not proper to forcefully inflict decisions as these students would not reach their potentials later in life. It is essential to serve as a guide and encourage them to study their desired course. Select your dream course but make sure to do a lot of research concerning it, have more than two choices of course in case the original course doesn't work out. Choose a course that goes well with the economy so you would be able to secure a job faster and easier after graduation and even if you want to settle for independency, to be self employed, you would be able to start something reasonable in your field of study with less stress.
